Soft water, salt air and the ice makers of the peninsula

Charleston Water System delivers moderately soft water to every tap from the Battery to Hampton Park, which changes how we approach an ice maker downtown. Inland, on Berkeley County water, a valve screen fills with scale and the cubes shrink year by year. On the peninsula the valve fails electrically, the fill tube freezes because a heater has quit or a door was left ajar during a party, and the salt air that reaches kitchens near the harbor corrodes the module contacts and the ejector motor terminals. The trip from Park Circle is fifteen minutes down I-26, then the usual hunt for a space near King Street or a lane behind a Wagener Terrace bungalow.
Three failures cover most of the peninsula ice maker calls. Tray full and frozen, nothing drops
The harvest is not being called: a failed thermostat on the mold, a stalled ejector motor, or a module or control board that has stopped cycling. We force a harvest manually and watch what the module does, then test the thermostat and motor. A module is a same-visit replacement from the van.
Hollow, small or misshapen cubes
A short fill. The inlet valve is weakening, the supply pressure is low, or the fill time has drifted on the board. Downtown it is almost never scale. We time the fill, read the valve, and check for a kinked line behind a refrigerator that has been pushed into a tight alcove in an old kitchen.
Ice tastes or smells wrong
A filter past its life, an open bin absorbing odors from a freezer that is running warm, or a sump of old ice that has not turned over. We replace the filter if you have one on hand or note the part, check the freezer temperature with a probe and discard the old ice. Taste rarely means a mechanical failure.
Water leaking into the bin or onto the floor
An overfilling valve that does not close fully, a cracked fill cup, or an ice maker tilted so the tray spills before it freezes. Leaks under the box are usually the fill line fitting at the back. We inspect the valve for a slow leak, check the level and trace the line to the wall.
Ice maker works, then quits for days
An intermittent: a door switch reading open, a thermostat that is borderline, or a freezer running warm in a peninsula kitchen with a door open to the piazza. We probe the freezer over a cycle, test the door switch and thermostat, and look at the defrost circuit, because a frosted evaporator warms the freezer just enough to stop ice.

Why is my downtown Charleston ice maker making hollow cubes if the water is soft?
Because hollow cubes mean a short fill, and on soft peninsula water the cause is a weakening inlet valve coil, low supply pressure or a fill time that has drifted, not scale. We time the fill, read the coil resistance and check the line behind the refrigerator for a kink. A new valve usually restores a full tray within a day.
Do you repair the ice maker or replace the whole assembly?
