Ranges and ovens across the Charleston area
The kitchen tells us what to load before we leave O’Hear Ave. A 1940s cottage on the circle or in Olde North Charleston usually has a 30-inch electric coil range, sometimes a 24-inch one. Peninsula single houses and Old Village kitchens run gas, often with a wall oven and a separate cooktop. Nexton, Cane Bay, Carolina Park and the Dorchester Rd subdivisions came with builder-grade glass-top electric ranges that fail street by street as they age together. Daniel Island and I’On kitchens carry Wolf, Thermador and Viking. Every one of those addresses is within about 35 minutes of Park Circle, and none pays a bridge or downtown surcharge.
Ovens fail in two ways here. Electric ovens lose the bake element, which cracks and arcs, or the temperature sensor drifts and the oven runs cold. Gas ovens lose the igniter, which still glows but no longer pulls enough current to open the safety valve; it clicks or glows for a minute and nothing lights. Salt air near the harbor speeds up both, and a hurricane-season surge can take the control board on a range in Mount Pleasant or Hanahan in one flash. A typical Saturday call from West Ashley: the broiler works, the bake does not, and dinner is on hold. That is an element, metered and changed from the van.
What the range or oven is usually telling you
Gas burner clicks but won’t light
The spark module is firing and the burner is not catching. Usually the burner cap is off center, the igniter tip is fouled with grease, or the spark electrode has cracked. If every burner clicks at once, the spark switch on one knob is shorted. We clean, reseat and meter before naming a part.
Gas oven glows but never lights
A weak igniter draws less current as it ages, and below a certain amperage the safety valve stays closed. The igniter glows orange, the smell of gas never comes, and the oven stays cold. We clamp a meter on the igniter circuit during a heat call and read the amps. Low reading, new igniter.
Electric oven won’t heat, broiler works
The bake element has opened. Look for a blister or a break along the coil, sometimes with a scorch mark on the oven floor. We meter the element for continuity, check the terminals behind the back wall for burnt connectors, and fit a new element from van stock. Most bakes are back the same visit.
Oven runs cold or bakes unevenly
A temperature sensor that has drifted, a convection fan that has stopped, or a door gasket that no longer seals. We read the sensor resistance at room temperature and again at heat, watch the fan, and check the door hinges for sag. Calibration is offered only after the parts are proven good.
Glass-top burner dead or stuck on high
Radiant elements under the glass fail open, and the switch that controls them can weld closed and run the burner at full heat. We lift the top, meter the element and the infinite switch, and replace the one that failed. A cracked top is a separate conversation, and the technician will have it plainly.
Display dead or error code after a storm
A surge through the range circuit takes the control board or the relay board, and sometimes only the display. We meter the incoming voltage at the terminal block, test the board outputs, and read the code against the model. Boards for the common GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and Samsung ranges are stocked or ordered with no second trip fee.

Stove and oven repair, how the visit runs
The visit begins with a heat call. The technician sets the oven to bake and watches what happens, because the failure shows itself in the first two minutes: an igniter that glows without lighting, an element that stays gray, a display that counts up while the sensor reads nothing. On a gas range the burner caps come off and each spark electrode is checked. Then the meter: amperage through the igniter, continuity across the element, resistance at the sensor, voltage at the board. When the failed part is certain, you see it and hear why. One written number follows, with the $99 diagnostic already inside. Say no and the $99 is the entire bill.

Do you repair both gas and electric ranges in North Charleston?
Yes. Gas is common in older peninsula and Mount Pleasant kitchens and in some Park Circle cottages that were converted; electric coil and glass-top ranges fill the rest of North Charleston, Hanahan and the subdivisions. The van carries igniters and valve parts for gas and elements and switches for electric on the same day.
I smell gas near the stove. What should I do before you arrive?
Turn the burner knobs off, open a window, and do not light anything. If the smell is strong, leave the house and call the gas utility first; they respond to leaks around the clock. Once the supply is safe, call us to find the failed valve, connector or igniter and repair it.
Can you fix a wall oven or a cooktop that is built into the counter?
We do wall ovens, drop-in cooktops and slide-in ranges across the Charleston area, including the built-in lines on Daniel Island and in Mount Pleasant. A wall oven comes out of its cabinet for element and board work, and goes back level and secured. Cooktops are lifted from the counter without disturbing the stone.
How long does an oven repair usually take?
Most element, igniter and switch repairs finish inside the first visit, because those parts ride on the van. A board or a sensor for a less common model is ordered and installed on a return trip with no second trip fee. You will know which it is before you approve the written price.
What am I paying if the range is not worth fixing?
The $99 diagnostic, and nothing more. The technician tests the range, tells you what failed and writes the repair price with the $99 already inside it. If you would rather replace the range, the visit closes at $99. If you approve, the online booking discount of up to $20 comes off the repair portion.
