Ice makers in refrigerators, Park Circle to the islands
First, what it is. The ice maker we repair is the module inside the refrigerator or freezer door: a mold, a small heater, an ejector motor, a thermostat or sensor, and an inlet valve at the back of the box that opens for a few seconds each cycle. We do not service standalone ice machines or the under-counter units in bars. From O’Hear Ave the calls run everywhere on the route: north to Hanahan and Goose Creek, east over the Don Holt Bridge to Daniel Island, south to the peninsula, across the Wando to Mount Pleasant, and out to Summerville and the beaches at 25 to 35 minutes, with no extra charge for the distance or the bridge.
Why they quit depends on where the water comes from and how hot the summer runs. On Charleston Water in North Charleston, Hanahan, downtown and West Ashley the water is soft, and a dead ice maker is a failed module, a stuck valve or a freezer that is not cold enough, not scale. On Berkeley County water in Goose Creek, Ladson and Summerville, lime narrows the valve after a few years and the cubes shrink. On Johns Island wells, scale is the first thing we look for. Then the heat: a French-door in a Wescott kitchen makes ice all winter and stops in July because the freezer section climbs three degrees and the mold never reaches harvest temperature.
What an ice maker symptom usually means
No ice at all, no sound
The module is not cycling. Either the arm or sensor thinks the bin is full, the module motor has died, or the freezer is too warm to trigger a harvest. We check the freezer temperature first, then force a harvest with the test points and meter the module and the heater.
Cycles but the mold stays dry
The module ejects and calls for water, and none comes. The inlet valve at the back has failed, the fill tube has frozen, or the saddle valve under the sink is closed or clogged. We meter the valve coil during the fill call, check the tube for ice, and confirm pressure at the supply.
Small or hollow cubes
Not enough water reaches the mold in the seconds the valve is open. Low supply pressure, a partly clogged valve screen, or a water filter overdue for a change. On Berkeley County water, lime in the valve is the usual cause. We measure the fill volume and replace the valve or the filter as needed.
Ice in the bin has frozen into one block
Either the bin sat unused and the cubes fused, common in a second refrigerator, or the valve is leaking a trickle between cycles and glazing the pile. We dump the bin, meter the valve for a full close, and check the door gasket, since warm air melting the top layer does the same thing.
Water leaking into the bin or onto the floor
A fill tube that has cracked or slipped out of the cup, a valve that will not shut, or an overfilled mold spilling on harvest. Water on the floor under the box is often the same valve at the rear. We pull the box, run a fill, and watch where the water goes before naming the part.
Ice tastes or smells off
Stale ice picks up odors from the freezer, a water filter past its life, or a mold coated in mineral film. We change the filter if it is due, clean the mold and bin, and check the freezer for an open package or a defrost drain that has begun to sour. The fix is often housekeeping, and we say so.
The procedure on an ice maker call
- Freezer temperature read first; a warm freezer makes no ice anywhere.
- Module forced through a harvest while the meter watches the valve.
- Failed part named plainly and written into one price, $99 inside.

Ice maker repair, from the module to the valve
The diagnosis starts with a thermometer, because an ice maker in a freezer that reads 10 degrees instead of zero will never harvest and nothing else matters until that is solved. If the freezer is right, the technician pulls the bin, lifts the module and forces a cycle. The ejector turns or does not; the heater warms or does not; the valve at the back clicks and fills, or stays quiet. The meter reads the valve coil, the heater and the thermostat or sensor. Water pressure at the supply and the filter date are checked before the valve is blamed. You get the part named and one written number with the $99 diagnostic inside it. Decline, and $99 is the full bill.

Do you fix standalone ice machines or just the one in the refrigerator?
Only the ice maker built into a refrigerator or freezer, including the door modules on French-door boxes. Standalone ice machines, under-counter nugget makers and commercial units are outside what we do, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than send a van. The refrigerator module is our regular work across the Charleston area.
My ice maker in North Charleston stopped in the summer. Why then?
Heat. A kitchen in a Park Circle cottage without much insulation, or a garage box in the Ashley Phosphate area, pushes the freezer a few degrees warmer in July, and a mold that never reaches harvest temperature never ejects. The technician checks the freezer temperature and the door gasket before the module itself is suspected.
Is the whole ice maker replaced, or just the broken piece?
It depends on the design. Older modular units let us change the module, the valve or the fill tube on their own. Many newer door-mounted makers are a single assembly and are replaced as one. Either way the technician explains which it is and writes one price for the work before anything is ordered or removed.
Does the water in the Charleston area cause ice maker problems?
In Hanahan, North Charleston, West Ashley, downtown and Mount Pleasant, no; the water is soft and the failures are mechanical or electrical. In Goose Creek, Ladson, Summerville and Moncks Corner the mild hardness leaves lime in the valve after a few years, and on Johns Island wells scale is common. We know the map and check accordingly.
How is the ice maker diagnostic billed?
The same as every machine we service: $99 for the visit and the testing. When you approve the written repair price, the $99 is already inside it, not stacked on top. When you pass on the repair, $99 closes the visit. Online bookings get up to $20 off the repair itself; the diagnostic does not move.
