Runs but no heat
On an electric dryer the thermal fuse, the heating element and the high-limit thermostat each get metered in turn; one of them is usually open. On gas, the igniter glows and the flame never lights, which points to the gas valve coils or the flame sensor. Either way the vent is checked, since it caused the failure.
Two cycles to dry a load
Heat is present but cannot leave. The vent gauge shows back pressure, and the duct behind the wall or under the floor is packed. We clear what is reachable, measure again, and tell you if the run needs a vent company. A cycling thermostat that trips early can also cut a load short.
Squeal or thump from the drum
A squeal that rises with the drum is a dry idler pulley or a rear bearing. A rhythmic thump is a flat spot on a drum roller or a glide worn through to the metal. The front panel comes off, the drum lifts out, and each roller is turned by hand. Worn sets are replaced together.
Burnt smell
Stop the dryer and call. Lint has reached the element housing or the burner tube and is scorching. We open the cabinet, clear the lint from the base and the heater box, check the element for a sagging coil that touches the housing, and confirm the vent before the machine runs again.
Drum won’t turn
The motor hums and the drum sits still: the belt has snapped, usually leaving a strip of rubber in the base. No hum at all is the door switch, the thermal fuse on some models, or the motor’s start winding. We meter the switch and the motor before the belt goes on.
Shuts off after a few minutes
A dryer that quits early has a motor overheating from lint on its cooling vanes, a moisture sensor bar coated in dryer-sheet film, or a control that reads the load as dry. The sensor bars get cleaned, the motor current is read, and the thermostat is metered at temperature.
