Stove, range and oven repair in North Charleston, any size kitchen

Plenty of North Charleston kitchens were laid out in the 1940s for a family that cooked on a 24-inch range, and the range there today is often the same width. Cold ovens, dead burners and clicking igniters get the same treatment in a cottage galley or a Wescott kitchen: a meter on the failed part, a plain explanation, and one written price before work starts.

Ranges and ovens in North Charleston kitchens

Noisette technician at a stainless gas range in a North Charleston kitchen
Stoves, ranges & ovens · North Charleston

Walk into a kitchen in Olde North Charleston, Liberty Hill or the older streets off Spruill Ave and the range is likely a compact electric coil unit, sometimes a 24-inch model that a landlord bought because nothing wider fits between the cabinets. Renovated cottages around Park Circle and E Montague Ave have traded up to slide-in gas or glass-top electric. Oak Terrace Preserve, Mixson and the subdivisions off Dorchester Rd got builder-grade glass-top ranges installed the same year, so they fail in clusters. Apartments on Rivers Ave and Ashley Phosphate Rd run plain coil ranges hard. Every one is within about fifteen minutes of the shop on O’Hear Ave, most inside ten.

What goes wrong tracks the kitchen. Coil ranges lose a surface element or the receptacle it plugs into, which chars and loosens after years of a heavy pot on one burner. Glass-top ranges lose a radiant element or the switch that runs it. Gas ranges in the renovated houses lose oven igniters and spark modules, and the Cooper River damp does spark electrodes no favors. Surges in hurricane season take control boards. A call from a Liberty Hill rental last fall: the tenant’s oven would not pass 250 degrees, the owner needed it fixed before an inspection, and the sensor read far out of range. Changed from the van, oven verified at temperature, invoice to the owner.

What the range is telling you, North Charleston edition

Coil burner dead or only warm

On the coil ranges common in North Charleston rentals, the element itself, the receptacle it plugs into, or the infinite switch behind the knob has failed. The receptacle chars where the element terminals seat. We swap the element to a working position to isolate the fault, then meter the switch and replace what failed.

Oven never gets hot, broiler does

The bake element has burned open, often with a visible break or a bright spot on the coil. The technician meters it for continuity, pulls the back wall to check for a burnt terminal, and fits a new element. On a 24-inch range the element is a different part, and the van carries both sizes.

Oven temperature is wrong

A sensor that has drifted reads the oven hotter or colder than it is, and the control follows it. The technician measures the sensor’s resistance cold and hot, checks the door gasket and hinges for a gap, and watches the convection fan if there is one. Only a proven-good oven gets an offset adjustment.

Gas igniter clicks and clicks

River-side humidity fouls spark electrodes and corrodes the spark module connections in the renovated Park Circle kitchens. A burner cap off its seat or a wet igniter after a boil-over does the same. We dry and reseat, clean the electrode, then meter the module and the switch if the clicking continues.

Gas oven glows, no flame

The oven igniter has weakened with age and no longer draws enough current to open the safety valve. It glows, the kitchen waits, nothing lights. A clamp meter on the igniter circuit during a bake call gives the answer in amps. Igniters for the common brands are on the van and replaced the same visit.

Glass top: one zone dead, or the display is blank

A radiant element under the glass has opened, or the control board took a surge in a summer storm. The top is lifted, the element and its switch are metered, and the board’s outputs are tested at the terminal block. Boards for the builder-grade Frigidaire, GE and Whirlpool ranges in Wescott and Oak Terrace Preserve are stocked or ordered.

The procedure on a North Charleston range call

  • Breaker off or gas valve closed before the range is moved or opened.
  • Elements, receptacles, switches, igniters and sensors metered, not swapped on a guess.
  • One written number with the $99 diagnostic inside; you approve before work.
  • Elements in 24-inch and 30-inch sizes, igniters and switches stocked on the van.
  • Oven run to temperature and checked, burners lit, written warranty left.

How a range or oven repair runs in North Charleston

The kitchen sets the pace. In a cottage galley the range comes out carefully on floor protection because there is nowhere else for it to go. The technician turns on the oven, watches the first two minutes, and tests each surface burner. Then the meter: continuity on the bake and broil elements, resistance on the sensor, amperage on a gas igniter, voltage at the terminal block, and the switches behind the knobs one by one. A code on the display points the way and the meter confirms it. Once the fault is proven, the part is shown to you and explained. The written number follows, $99 diagnostic included; if you would rather replace the range, $99 is the whole bill.

GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Kenmore, Amana and Maytag are the ranges in most North Charleston kitchens, with KitchenAid, Bosch and the occasional Viking or Wolf in the renovated houses near E Montague Ave. Landlords account for many of the range calls in this city: a dead bake element fails a move-in walkthrough, so the property manager books the visit for the vacant unit, the technician texts the written price, and the owner approves from the office. Invoice and written warranty go to the owner. Families at Joint Base Charleston get scheduling around shift work and PCS deadlines. Monday to Saturday. Online bookings are credited up to $20 against the repair; the $99 diagnostic keeps its place inside the number you approve.

Asked in North Charleston

Do you work on 24-inch and apartment-size ranges in North Charleston?

Yes, and often. Cottages in Olde North Charleston and Liberty Hill and many Rivers Ave apartments have compact ranges. Elements, receptacles and switches for those sizes ride on the van alongside the 30-inch parts. The technician also knows how to get one out of a tight galley without marking the cabinets.

The oven in my North Charleston rental failed the day before a new tenant moves in. How fast can you come?

Ranges are same-week work and next day is common for North Charleston because the shop is on O’Hear Ave. Tell us the move-in date when you book. Bake elements, igniters and switches are on the van, so most ovens are back at temperature the same visit, and the invoice and written warranty are emailed to you.

Can you repair a gas range in a converted Park Circle cottage?

Yes. Many renovated houses on and around the circle added a gas line for a slide-in range. The technician carries oven igniters, spark modules and electrodes, checks the flex connector and the regulator for leaks, and confirms every burner lights with a clean blue flame before the job is called done.

Is it safe to keep using a range with one dead burner?

Usually, if the dead burner is simply open. If the receptacle behind a coil element is charred, or a knob is warm to the touch, or you smell anything electrical, stop using that side and call. A charred receptacle can arc. The technician checks every position, not only the one you reported.

How much is the diagnostic on a stove or oven, and is it added to the repair?

The diagnostic is $99. It is not added to the repair; the written price you approve already has the $99 counted inside it. If you decide the range is not worth fixing, $99 is the full amount. Book online and the repair itself comes down by up to $20, with the diagnostic unchanged.
